On World AIDS Day, December 1, a press conference was held at the Nizhny Novgorod Regional Information Center with representatives from the regional Ministry of Health and relevant services.

The Nizhny Novgorod Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology named after Academician I.N. Blokhina of Rospotrebnadzor was represented by E.E. Kuzovatova, PhD, Associate Professor, Director of the Volga District Center for AIDS Prevention and Control at the institute. T.N. Kovalenko, Deputy Minister of Health of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, and N.A. Sadykova, Deputy Head of the Rospotrebnadzor Office for the Nizhny Novgorod Region, also participated in the press conference.
The event discussed the current regional situation regarding morbidity and antiretroviral therapy coverage, and presented a new strategy for combating HIV infection. Key aspects of the disease's progression in our region were outlined during the press conference:
- Today, HIV is a controllable chronic infection, and modern medications allow patients to live full lives;
- In the region, the disease has been diagnosed in approximately half of one percent of the population;
- Timely diagnosis is essential – rapid tests are available in all districts of the region, at clinics, and at mobile screening events. Initial HIV testing and subsequent laboratory testing are completely free and are performed using modern equipment.
