Nikolay Semashko: the creator of Soviet healthcare

The Soviet healthcare system was considered one of the best in the world. Its uniqueness lay in the unified principles of organization and centralization of all healthcare, and the key role was played by free of charge, accessibility and qualification. The creator of the model was Nikolai Aleksandrovich Semashko, the first People's Commissar of Health of the Soviet Union.
World AIDS Day

World AIDS Day, declared in 1988, was the first internationally recognized day dedicated to health protection. Its purpose is to raise global awareness of HIV/AIDS, provide support to people living with HIV, and unite efforts to combat the spread of this disease.

On April 22, 2024, a meeting was held at the Institute with 3rd year students of the Department of Molecular Biology and Immunology of the Institute of Biology and Biomedicine of Nizhny Novgorod State University. N.I. Lobachevsky, dedicated to the 103rd anniversary of the birth of academician I.N. Blokhina (04/21/1921 – 04/14/1999).

The meeting with students was held in the format of the “Open Day in Science” project, which is part of the “Science is Nearby” initiative, which defines the task of attracting talented youth to the field of scientific research and development within the framework of the Decade of Science and Technology announced by the President of Russia. The children were greeted by the director of the Institute, N.N. Zaitseva, who spoke about the life path of I.N. Blokhina - Doctor of Medical Sciences, Academician of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, laureate of the USSR State Prize, Honorary Citizen of N. Novgorod, director of the Institute (1955–1999), whose name the Institute is named after. The students were shown a film that reflected the main areas of activity and strategic development of the Institute.
A tour of the laboratory departments of the Institute was conducted; students were introduced to the organization of the scientific process, developments and results of scientific research, and modern laboratory equipment. The guys talked with leading scientists and young employees of the Institute and asked questions that interested them. Students visited the museum of the institute, which presented historical milestones in the formation and development of the institution, as well as a separate exhibition dedicated to the life and work of I.N. Blokhina.
