Nikolay Semashko: the creator of Soviet healthcare

The Soviet healthcare system was considered one of the best in the world. Its uniqueness lay in the unified principles of organization and centralization of all healthcare, and the key role was played by free of charge, accessibility and qualification. The creator of the model was Nikolai Aleksandrovich Semashko, the first People's Commissar of Health of the Soviet Union.
World AIDS Day

World AIDS Day, declared in 1988, was the first internationally recognized day dedicated to health protection. Its purpose is to raise global awareness of HIV/AIDS, provide support to people living with HIV, and unite efforts to combat the spread of this disease.

In July 2024, PhD, Senior Researcher at the Laboratory of Epidemiology of Viral Hepatitis Zalesskikh A.A., as part of the Rospotrebnadzor delegation, took part in a business trip to the Republic of Burundi (Bujumbura)

Artem Aleksandrovich was involved in the implementation of joint research projects "Socio-demographic portrait of a patient receiving medical services in connection with HIV infection" and "Analysis of the structure and level of drug resistance of HIV among naive and experienced patients with HIV infection, as well as the genetic characteristics of virus variants circulating in the country."

On behalf of the Republic of Burundi, employees of the National Institute of Public Health of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Burundi (Institut National de Santé Publique) took part in the work.

Russian scientists carried out large-scale work on the analysis of epidemiological information on HIV-positive patients of the Republic of Burundi receiving antiretroviral therapy; extraction of nucleic acids from blood samples of these patients; assessment of the current viral load using real time PCR; implementation of reverse transcription and 1 round of PCR amplification of the pol and rev regions of the pathogen genome for further sequencing for the purpose of subsequent analysis of the genetic diversity and drug resistance of the human immunodeficiency virus in the Republic of Burundi.
