March 15, 2021 marks the 70th anniversary of the birth of the Honored Doctor of the Russian Federation, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor E.I. Efimov, who has been the director of the Nizhny Novgorod Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology named after Academician I.N. Blokhina Rospotrebnadzor. Having started his career as a military doctor, Evgeny Igorevich went through all the stages of a military career and professional growth in the field of epidemiology, continues to serve medical science at the present time.

Evgeny Igorevich Efimov was born on March 15, 1951 in Ivanovo in a family of employees. After graduation, he entered the Ivanovo State Medical Institute, then became a student of the military medical faculty of the Gorky Medical Institute named after CM. Kirov. After his graduation in 1974, a doctor-epidemiologist, Lieutenant Efimov was sent to serve in the Baltic Fleet and was appointed head of the medical service of the squadron destroyer "Lookout". Then the young military doctor headed the department of especially dangerous infections of the sanitary-epidemiological detachment of the Liepaja naval base.
After completing his postgraduate studies at the Department of General and Military Epidemiology of the CM. Kirov (Leningrad) in 1985 E.I. Efimov defended his Ph.D. thesis on "Epidemiology and prevention of meningococcal infection in military personnel."

For further service, Evgeny Igorevich was sent to the city of Tomsk at the Military Medical Faculty at the Medical Institute, and in 1986 he was sent to Afghanistan, where he took part in hostilities as part of a limited contingent of Soviet troops.

At the end of 1987, Evgeny Igorevich returned to Gorky, served at the Military Medical Institute of the Federal Border Service of Russia as a senior teacher, and then, from 1993 to 1999, headed the Department of General and Military Epidemiology. In 1998 he successfully defended his thesis for the degree of Doctor of Medical Sciences "Patterns and mechanisms of development of the epidemic process of meningococcal infection in military teams."

In 1999 E.I. Efimov headed the Nizhny Novgorod Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology after I.N. Blokhina, who headed the institute for 44 years. This period was especially difficult for the institute, both economically and organizationally. E.I. Efimov had to solve the problem of preserving the research base of the institute and scientific personnel. Thanks to his experience, competence and energy, it was possible to overcome all the difficulties of the post-perestroika period, to retain the main team of highly professional personnel. Under the leadership of E.I. Efimov, the development of both traditional for the institute and new, relevant for the region, scientific directions in the field of studying epidemiological processes, improving the diagnosis of current infections, and developing methods of combating them was continued. An important event for the institute was the construction of a new modern scientific and laboratory building of the institute, commissioned in 2013, equipped with unique, high-tech equipment, which made it possible to conduct scientific research at a qualitatively higher level.

Currently, under the leadership of E.I. Efimov Institute was formed as a single scientific, clinical and educational complex, including 9 research laboratories, on the basis of which there are 4 reference, scientific and practical and scientific and methodological centers, a clinic of infectious diseases, the Privolzhsky district center for the prevention and control of AIDS, center for the training of scientific personnel.

The main areas of scientific activity of Evgeny Igorevich are epidemiology and prevention of aerosol anthroponosis, prenosological diagnostics and correction of secondary immunodeficiency states, organization of epidemiological surveillance, preventive and anti-epidemic measures in infectious diseases. In recent years, E.I. Efimov devotes to the development and implementation of geoinformation technologies into the system of epidemiological surveillance, improving the monitoring of pathogens of viral hepatitis, AEI, HAI, enterovirus, HIV infection, and the development of a complex of probiotic drugs. Since 2020, under the guidance of Professor E.I. Efimov Institute is actively involved in diagnostic research and scientific development related to the new coronavirus infection.

Evgeny Igorevich is the author of more than three hundred scientific papers, four inventions. Within the framework of the scientific school of Professor E.I. Efimov, five candidate and three doctoral dissertations were defended, two more doctoral and master's theses are currently being carried out.

Yevgeny Igorevich's long-term fruitful work was marked by state awards: the honorary title "Honored Doctor of the Russian Federation", badges "Excellence in Health Care" and "Honorary Worker of Rospotrebnadzor", medal of the Order of Merit to the Fatherland, 2nd degree, medal "90 years of sanitary and epidemiological service Russia ”, the medal“ 95 years of the State Sanitary and Epidemiological Service of Russia ”, certificates of honor of the Ministry of Health of Russia and the Ministry of Health and Social Development of Russia, the Governor of the Nizhny Novgorod Region and the Legislative Assembly of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, etc., medals for impeccable service and jubilees of the Ministry of Defense of the USSR (RF) and the FSB of Russia.

The results of scientific and scientific-practical activities of the Nizhny Novgorod Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology named after Academician I.N. Blokhina Rospotrebnadzor, headed by E.I. Efimov, are aimed at achieving the main goal - scientific support of sanitary and epidemiological surveillance and control of infectious diseases in the region and Russia as a whole.
