Nikolay Semashko: the creator of Soviet healthcare
02  12.2024
The Soviet healthcare system was considered one of the best in the world. Its uniqueness lay in the unified principles of organization and centralization of all healthcare, and the key role was played by free of charge, accessibility and qualification. The creator of the model was Nikolai Aleksandrovich Semashko, the first People's Commissar of Health of the Soviet Union.
World AIDS Day
27  11.2024
World AIDS Day, declared in 1988, was the first internationally recognized day dedicated to health protection. Its purpose is to raise global awareness of HIV/AIDS, provide support to people living with HIV, and unite efforts to combat the spread of this disease.

Head of the laboratory – Candidate of  Medical Sciences (PhD. In Medicine)

Anastasiya V. Polyanina

The laboratory of viral hepatitis was organized by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, Honorary  scientist, M. D.Aleinik.

Directions of activities:

  • Study of the spatial and temporal characteristics of the manifestations and mechanisms of regulation of the epidemiological process of various etiological forms of viral hepatitis (A, B, C, D, G, E, TT, mixed hepatitis and hepatitis of unknown etiology) based on dynamic observations using new molecular genetic technologies.
  • Study of the duration, intensity and characteristics of the formation of cellular and humoral post-vaccination immunity in hepatitis A and B.
  • Improvement of the detection of hepatitis A virus as a marker of the etiological and epidemiological problems of water bodies using optimized methods of virus concentration.

Laboratory achievements:

  • New knowledge was obtained about the development of the epidemic process of viral hepatitis on the territory of a large industrial city in the European zone of Russia on the basis of official morbidity data and modern methods of specific diagnosis (ELISA, PCR). For the first time, a comprehensive assessment of the quantitative and qualitative parameters of the manifest and latent components of the epidemic process of hepatitis A, B and C was given.
  • Using the modern technology to study the structure of acute viral hepatitis, the spectrum of etiologically deciphered cases of infection has been extended; it is shown that, along with the traditional pathogens of viral hepatitis (A,B,C), among the population of the Nizhny Novgorod region circulate hepatitis E, G, TT viruses and mutant forms of hepatitis B.
  • The understanding of the terms of epidemic danger of patients with hepatitis A has been extended.
  • For the first time using the methods of RT-PCR, a link was established between the detection of HAV RNA in water bodies and the development of the epidemic process of hepatitis A in a specific area in conditions of sporadic and outbreak – associated morbidities. It is proved that the detection of HAV RNA by RT-PCR in the faeces of patients with hepatitis A and contact, as well as in water bodies is a marker of their epidemic danger. The conditions affecting the intensity of HAVcirculation in water bodies are determined.
  • By direct sequencing of the VP1-2A variable region of the HAV genome, primary circulation in the Nizhny Novgorod region of subtype IA with single definitions of IB and IIIA subtypes was detected.
  • For the first time in the Russian Federation, the prevalence of hepatitis E among various population groups in the Nizhny Novgorod region has been studied.
  • The characteristic of genovariants of HCV circulating in the population of the Nizhny Novgorod region is given.
